As illustrated here, the simplicity of the ancient design is maintained, though the materials used to build this modern version may well be more contemporary. For extra punch, the ' tree trunk ' could be hollow and an internal weight or shaft could impact a piston at the end as the thrust reaches it's maximum and comes to an abrupt halt ; especially when the mooring line goes taught after every wave.

magnetic coil around the cylinder could also utilize that movement and turn it directly into an electrical charge.
